The buying problem
- Cupping notes alone do not say buy or not. A score tells you how a cup tasted. It does not tell you whether the lot is worth buying, at what price, or under what conditions.
- Supplier claims are not evidence. Origin, processing, and quality claims need to be checked against the sample in front of you — and the check needs to be recorded.
- Decisions need a record. When a lot disappoints, "we liked the sample" is not a defense. A written judgment with its evidence attached is.
How judgment is formed
Every lot is assessed on four factors — variety, processing, sensory, QC — and the judgment follows an evidence chain: sample → cupping → QC measurement → evidence index → verdict. Origin and traceability information enters as evidence, not as a fifth factor.
- 1 · Sample
Representative samples to a stated specification. Non-representative samples are the sender's responsibility.
- 2 · Cupping
Stated protocol (default SCA CVA), 5 cups per sample for uniformity checks, recorded by a licensed Q Grader. Only what is actually cupped is written down.
- 3 · QC measurement
Moisture, density, and defect rate measured — not estimated. Unmeasured items are marked "not measured".
- 4 · Verdict
One conclusion — Buy, Buy with conditions, or Do not buy — with its basis, conditions, and evidence scope on one page. If evidence is insufficient, we say so: Defer judgment.
The pilot package
Pricing is agreed in a written quote after scope is confirmed. Three deliverables: origin dossier card, one-page cupping verdict report, raw records pack. 2–3 weeks per lot from receipt of a qualified sample. Excludes taxes; sample shipping borne by the sender.

The founder
From plant science to coffee decisions. Fan Xu (徐樊) — Coffee Judgment Consultant, founder of Coffactor. Trained in horticulture and botany, a licensed Q Grader, and a lecturer authorized to teach coffee courses. The judgment service is built from that combination: plant science, origin understanding, sensory evaluation, and real buying decisions.
